Value is Vital

Four separate studies conducted by Milliman between 2011 and 2015 show Aurora has been the most effective health care system in limiting hospital payment increases, largely due to its efficiencies in controlling hospital operating costs.

Aurora’s commitment to delivering health care more efficiently has had a direct impact on the business community. Since 2012, commercial payments to Aurora hospitals have been 3% to 5% below the average for southeastern Wisconsin hospitals. (Based on Milliman’s calculations for commercial payments per adjusted equivalent discharge (AED), which includes inpatient and outpatient encounters).

Efficiency Matters

In five separate HCTRends studies (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014) Aurora hospitals outperformed all other southeastern Wisconsin hospitals in terms of cost efficiency. In the most recent study, Aurora hospitals were 3% more efficient.  HCTRends studies of hospitals in northeastern Wisconsin found that Aurora hospitals are 4% more cost-efficient than the regional average (Measuring the Quality Achievements and Cost Efficiency of Wisconsin Hospitals (HCTends, March 2014)).
"Aurora’s ability to constrain the growth of commercial payment increases combined with its dominant market share is a significant reason the Milwaukee region compared favorable to the national average."

Quality is Key

Quality is a key aspect in containing health care costs. Aurora has demonstrated superior performance in this area as well by pioneering innovative care coordination for more than 20 years. Aurora’s asthma and diabetes care management programs became standard practices nationwide. In addition, Aurora was selected as the top-performing health system in The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ six-year Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration Project..
